“Don’t get set into one form, adapt it and build your own, let it grow, be like water.” – Bruce Lee
I’ve been testing this tool and I highly recommend it. Why?
Because it’s an amazing tool to keep all your readings in the same place. It basically works like this:
You have a browser plugin that let’s you grab the text and send it to dotdotdot
That’s important: Only the text content so you get rid of all clutter (Banners, promos, newsletter signups, etc)
You add this into your dotdotdot Library and you can start reading inmediatly.
Beautiful, only text, in a white screen as it should be!
You can make comments of parts of the text and read it cross devices (Iphone, Ipad currently)
Just if you were taking notes in your studies, select part, comment, share.
Do you like the idea ?
Well, I loved it. But as with anything else, you have to try it for yourself!
They are going to work out an Android version too. But we need to give them some time, it’s hard to develop something and cope with so many different versions.
So here is the deal:
Got a few invitations left, but they are reserved only for book lovers and digital readers.
If you want to receive one, send me a twit with your blog or your reading recommendations and you will receive an invitation.
Now you should be all set, try to install a plugin and it should fetch the remote file and download it to your wp-content/plugins folder correctly. If you like this article please hit the sharing buttons.
This is a modification we did to a Peggy2 led panel.
JP1 y JP2 enable the “serial hack” (Map at the footer of this post)
The steps to follow if you want to try this:
Install this program in the Peggy through USB using Arduino software. This little program is just a loop that renders in the led panel putting Peggy in “Serial mode”
Make the electrical brige like shown in the picture
Originally the bridge is from P2 to JP3 and JP4 so enabling Peggy2 to be programmed. To make this point clear, after changing the bridge you will not be able to install a program in Peggy, you will just send serial data through the USB
Download processing and try out programs designed to send data to Peggy
There are some examples at the end of this entry
This is the hardware modification explained by Carlos Fasani
Originally Peggy 2 has 2 bridges (0 ohm resistances) in jumpers JP3 and JP4.
With this connection the lines A_Sel and B_Sel of the multiplexor 74HC154 (U2) that controls rows 0 to 14 are connected to RXD (pin 2) and TXD (pin 3) of the microprocessor ATmega (U1).
But as this communication legs are needed to recevied serial data we take out JP3 and JP4 leaving the serial line desconected from 74HC154 (U2).
And then we bridge JP1 and JP2 connecting A_Sel and B_Sel from multiplexor 74HC154 (U2) to SDA (pin 27) and SCL (pin 28).
This way Peggy is ready to receive data and light the ROWS at the same time.
Windell, the Chief Scientist of Evil Mad Scientist replied to our email pointing out some important details that can be useful to make this even better:
It looks like you’ve run the two jumpers as follows:
* First jumper: From the left side of JP2 to the right side of JP4, and
* Second jumper: From the left side of JP1 to the right side of JP3.
If I’m seeing this correctly, then your modification is exactly equivalent to putting the two jumpers in locations JP1 and JP2. (See the attached screenshot for verification of how this is wired.) And if so, you *should* still be able to reprogram the board, even after making the modification.
Thanks a lot for your clarification. I still didn’t tried this out since I forgot my soldier equipment but for sure it will work out. Windell also pointed out that the latest Peggy 2 versions are already capable of receiving serial data and operating the full display at the same time, so long as you have the SER option selected on the board, and you are using our Peggy2Serial library and its RecvSerial.pde sketch
Fe de erratas para Peggy2 mapa: Populate ONLY (JP1 and JP2) OR (JP3 and JP4). Select: JP1 and JP2 to enable the “serial hack” or Select: JP3 and JP4 for exact compatibility with Peggy 2.0.
Each day we will work more blindly in the SEO World
The reason is that Google is quite forcing Secure Socket Layer (SSL or https) so this is starting to appear as traffic keywords “Not provided” in Analytics. So what are the keywords that the user typed in Google get our site in the search results:
Only Google knows
The fact is that the (not provided) traffic will keep on growing. First, because any user that is logged with any Google device will send their encrypted searchs to the (not provided) list. And secondly, because Firefox and other navigators decided to encrypt all the searches done by Google, independently if you are logged into a Google account or not.
After the updates of 10th December in Google Chrome the browser will have the exact encryption as Firefox, hence that means that you will find a closed door when you search for keyword data in any web analytics tool.
To explain it in a simple way, that means that the (not provided) traffic source will keep on growing giving us less and less information about the search keywords that brought the users into our websites.
So what will the Search Engine Optimizations experts will do when they are forced to work almost blind ?
We will do what we’ve done through all obstacles in life: We will adapt and survive (Darwin said it very well)
There is an exception about this when the keywords are revealed: It’s when you use this keywords to do advertising in Google Adwords. Then they have to provide this information.
And there is much more in SEO than tracking search engine results. So if you are a fan of tracking all the keywords and doing all this little adjustments in your content and titles to bring more traffic I personally suggest one thing: Enjoy while it lasts because after this you will have to learn a whole new way to do it. And maybe focus more on original content or social engagement. Or maybe just combine it with SEM and make Google earn a few more bucks.
Google has been trying to tell it very clear long time ago saying “The ranking should not be used as a SEO metric” (Really ?) and now it seems that they are forcing their statement to be right. Because there is not other choice:
The first thing you have to know is that if you live from Google, your business depends on Google and if you don’t play with Google’s rules…you are going to be expulsed from the match.
It’s been 4 months since I arrived to Berlin and I had 2 Jobs already. If you work in IT,web developer or designer, there is work but you need to be aware that there are positions available in the startup world but nobody will guarantee a stable position. So, sometimes you have to define the position yourself, if you expect sit 8 hours a day in front of a laptop and get a salary you are probably wasting time reading this post (and probably also in Berlin)
One important thing to realice is that you should not accept to work on a week’s trial at your expenses. That is totally unnecessary! About two-day trial, max. 2 hours per day, is enough to know whether or not you know the position. To be known that lost time, is less money in your account and more frustration. Do not give away your time for free!
Now onto the recommendations, so sit comfortably, switch off Spotify and read:
The hour where you need to take action, send the CV/ Resume through email or the website, should be from 8 to 10 AM.
This is the most important point! If you are in the RRHH Role and you get a CV at 8.30 and another at 19 hrs, even without opening it, Which looks more serious?
Send always a Cover letter I know it sounds a bit old fashioned. But you are looking for a job in Deutschland and to be formal is always important. So you will dedícate some precious minutes to write a decent and personalized cover letter. Personalized means written specially for each job position, not to do copy and paste, or you will loose points.
You will say always the truth in every point, with dates and references Truth and transparency will never be overrated. So if you say that you know how to use Jquery framework or any other technology is because you have real experience working with it.
Make a nice webpage where you can show your work portfolio If you are a web developer, video maker or any other are that can be shown online, create a website in wordpress.com or any other content management system and put examples of your work. I’ll go further: Upload your CV also. You never know where someone would be interested in knowing more about you.
Visit the job portals in a daily basis and prepare your cover letters (Point #2) Do not forget about the recommended sending hours in point #1
If you work in IT/online LinkedIn Germany will be your breakfast each morning
And to close this entry here goes the last one and maybe the most important one: The German is not easy to learn. There is no chip you can plug into your mind to adquire knowledge and if it was I would have used it long time ago. You will dedícate long months to learn it and you will still speak really bad German. So put yourself onto it!
Once a journalist asked Paco de Lucia how it felt to be known as the better guitarrist of the world and he replied:
“Anyone can be the best guitar player if he practices 8 hours a day, 6 days a week for 1o years” That’s the only secret.
Today I was speaking with my father and he dropped in the conversation if I have tried the “Historical pictures” mode in Google Earth. (Historisches Bildmaterial auf Deutsch)
This historical images have been collected and curated by the GeoInformation group where taken by both the Royal Air Force (RAF) and United States Air Force (USAF) during WWII so they could plan where to drop their bombs and do city recconaissance. It’s interesting that now can be used for a much better reason and it’s really cool that Google added them to their Earth product.
This is not a new feature, as it was rolled out in the beginning of 2009, but it seems is only available for some cities. As is for Berlin. Images are quite blurry in 1943 aerial shots, but they are quite good in 1953 and onwards. It’s interesting to see that a berlin post-war 1943 picture and how it was already partly reconstructed 10 years afterwards. At least for Berlin there is a gat of 57 years from 1953 till year 2000 where next aerial pictures appear on the map.
So if you are interested in history like me it would be very interesting to combine the Virtual Museum of Dead Places with this feature of Google Earth and make a mashup of how this abandoned structures changed over time.
Cancellation of my latest trip
Last weekend the urban exploration trip to Rüdersdorf was cancelled. It’s nice to bike in the snow but it’s crazy and quite dangerous to do it if the temperatures drop and you have the ice melting under your wheels.
If you want to learn some useful business words in Deutsch I highly recommend to start using ebay.de
“Wir drücken Ihnen die Daumen!”
We cross the fingers for you ebay says when you place a bid.
Another interesting phrase I learn for conversation this days it’s:
“Es hängt davon ab” – It depends
Looking for work
“Sehr gute Deutschkenntnisse” – Means that you have a good knowledge of the language.
Usually at the middle of a work interview your Arbeitgeber will ask “Shall we switch to Deutsch” And at that precise moment if you say “Nein!” you will loose like 4 points.
If you speak english you will tend to speak shitty Deutsch or “retarded Deustch” mixing both languages.
For example you will say:
Ich habe ins Rathaus anmelded
Nein! Take that chewingum out of your mouth and write down in richtig Deutsch:
Ich habe mich ins Rathaus angemelded
“Ich habe einen Kater” – I have a hangover.
Never say this at work, if you’ve been brave enough to get out into that “cool” bar in Neuköln with your spanisch friends, then you stand like a man until the end of work and you hold the tears tight.
“Ich gehe 4 stunde ins fitnesscenter. Ich habe einen Muskelkater” – I’ve been 4 hours in the gym. I have a muscle ache (Or muscle hangover)
